Turkish Embassy hosts World Breakfast Day

The Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye observed the World Breakfast Day with several ministers, deputy ministers and high-ranking government officials held at the ambassador’s residence recently.

The annual World Breakfast Day is designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as the first Sunday of every June. Turkish Ambassador Prof. Dr. Hamit Ersoy hosted the guests at his residence to mark the morning with a traditional Turkish breakfast spread.

The Turkish cuisine prepared by the Embassy Chef, Adem Can, guaranteed a diverse set of flavours and aromas for the guests. Turkish Ambassador Prof. Dr. Hamit Ersoy, in his welcoming remarks, highlighted the central significance of breakfast in Turkish culture.

For the Turkish people, the center of society is the family and at the center of the family is the breakfast table where they start the day together – this is essential in all families without exception. Breakfast is the time when family members unite and exchange their day schedules and make plans for the evening, the Ambassador said.

He added that Sunday breakfasts are especially significant as they are followed by traditionally brewed Turkish tea and Turkish coffee and often turn into a convivial family and friends’ gatherings.

Marking the occasion last year were several activities, held not only across Türkiye but also 257 of its foreign missions across the world. The center of the celebrations was Türkiye’s Eastern province of Van, which is known as the world capital of breakfasts with its large, diverse and rich breakfast table spreads.

Türkiye initiated the World Breakfast Day in 2020 and declared it as the first Sunday of each June. Türkiye recently applied to UNESCO to register its cherished breakfast culture as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Turkish cuisine is one of the most appetising and rich cuisines in the world of culinary art and gastronomy, and Turkish people are known to be quite passionate about food like Bruneians.
