Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) will resume flights to Balikpapan on 19 February 2025, reestablishing a key regional route after more than 20 years.
The twice-weekly service, operating on Wednesdays and Saturdays with RB’s Airbus A320neo, is set to drive tourism, trade and investment opportunities while providing seamless connections within RB’s growing network.
RB first introduced the Brunei-Balikpapan route on 9 December 1994 but ceased operations on 15 February 2001.

In his speech at a reception to mark the relaunch, RB’s CEO Captain Sabirin Haji Abd Hamid said that the air service reconnection of Balikpapan to Bandar Seri Begawan reflects the longstanding and deeply rooted friendship between Brunei Darussalam and the Republic of Indonesia.
“This relaunch will enable more regional collaboration and the mutual prosperity of our communities. The Brunei-Balikpapan route serves as a strategic bridge, opening new opportunities for partnership and growth while connecting people to key economic and cultural hubs,” he said.

He added: “It provides seamless access to Balikpapan and the future Indonesian capital, Nusantara, through Brunei and vice versa to the other destinations within RB’s network.”
The national carrier’s move to resume Balikpapan flights aligns with Brunei’s long-term economic strategies under Wawasan Brunei 2035 and the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) initiative.
The CEO highlighted that strengthening regional connectivity with Kalimantan plays a crucial role in facilitating trade and investment opportunities, directly supporting Brunei’s efforts to diversify its economy.

“The vision emphasises the need to cultivate a dynamic and sustainable economy, reduce our dependence on oil and gas revenues, and create high-value employment opportunities for our citizens,” said Captain Sabirin.
Balikpapan is known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, with stunning beaches like Kemala and Melawai offering peaceful escapes.
The city also highlights wildlife conservation, featuring the Sun Bear Conservation Center and Samboja Lestari Orangutan Sanctuary, where visitors can see endangered species up close.

“I encourage everyone to take advantage of this renewed opportunity to explore what Balikpapan has to offer, whether for leisure or business. This destination is a gateway to a region full of potential and charm,” he said.
Captain Sabirin extended appreciation to Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Brunei Darussalam Professor Dr Achmad Ubaedillah for his support and partnership in making the relaunch a success.
The reception was attended by Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Juanda Hj Abdul Rashid who is also Chairman of RB, RB Board of Directors, representatives from Brunei’s business and diplomatic community.

Guests at the event enjoyed a ceremonial dish from Indonesia called “Nasi Tumpeng to symbolise gratitude and good fortune and a cultural performance courtesy of the Indonesian Embassy.
