Brunei journalists wrap up EU immersion with high-level talks in Brussels

Five journalists from Brunei Darussalam have concluded an enriching week-long programme in Brussels, designed to deepen media collaboration and mutual understanding between the European Union (EU) and Brunei.

Supported by the EU-Brunei Darussalam Partnership Facility, the initiative provided an immersive exploration of EU institutions, policies, and cultural heritage, while highlighting the media’s role in tackling global challenges.

From 12 to 16 May, the journalists, representing five public and private-sector media organisations, participated in high-level meetings with key EU bodies, including the European External Action Service (EEAS), the European Commission, and the European Parliament, as well as civil society groups.

The programme offered in-depth discussions on critical policy areas such as sustainable development, climate action, including the EU’s deforestation law and plastic treaty, digital transformation and media freedom.

Cultural visits to Brussels’ iconic landmarks, such as the House of European History and the Parlamentarium Museum, further enriched their understanding of European heritage. On the final day, the delegation met with Brunei Darussalam Ambassador to Belgium and the EU His Excellency Haji Adnan Haji Mohd Ja’afar, to reflect on their experiences.

EU Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam His Excellency Denis Chaibi, in a statement, said that it has been an honour to welcome this group of journalists from the sultanate.

“As the saying goes, friendship is a sacred knowing, and that journey begins by visiting each other’s homes and sharing perspectives. Through such exchanges, the EU and Brunei can grow closer as partners,” he said.

For his part, Minister Counsellor for Parliamentary Affairs at the EU Delegation to ASEAN Antoine Ripoll added: “Hosting these journalists has been a privilege. In today’s world, mutual learning and deepening ties between Europe and Southeast Asia—both politically and through people-to-people connections—are more vital than ever. We hope this visit inspires further exchanges in both directions.”

As Brunei Darussalam currently serves as the ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations Country Coordinator, the programme aimed to enhance journalists’ understanding of EU policies and Brunei’s role in fostering regional dialogue. The visit marks a meaningful step in strengthening EU-Brunei relations through media engagement.
