The Government of Japan has conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star decoration on Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Idriss Pengiran Temanggong Pengiran Haji Mohammad, in recognition of his contribution towards strengthening bilateral relations and promoting friendship between Brunei and Japan.
The former ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Japan received one of Japan’s highest honours from the Japanese Ambassador to Brunei Yutaka Kikuta in a ceremony held at the ambassador’s residence.
The Order of the Rising Sun was established in 1875 as Japan’s first national decoration and is a prestigious Order that honours people in Japan and abroad who have made outstanding achievements in various fields of society.
The ambassador in his remarks at the ceremony commended Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Idriss commitment in fostering the good relations shared between both countries during his tenure as Brunei’s Ambassador to Japan from 1987 to 1996.
Pengiran Dato played a significant role in facilitating high-level visits, including His Majesty the Sultan’s visit to Japan in 1989 for the funeral ceremony of Emperor Showa, and again in 1990 for the enthronement of His Majesty Emperor Akihito (now Emperor Emeritus).
He also contributed to the launch of Royal Brunei Airlines’ (RB) regular flights to Japan, working closely with both governments towards the conclusion of an air services agreement signed in 1993.
In his speech, the former ambassador expressed his gratitude to the government of Japan for the medal.
“My years in Japan was defined by the bilateral commitments of both countries, always moving forward towards peace, friendship and cooperation,” he shared.
The Order of the Rising Sun features rays of sunlight radiating from the rising sun while the attachments are shaped into paulownia flowers and leaves.
The order is awarded in the name of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan and is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in international relations, Japanese culture promotion, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment.
The Order of the Rising Sun comprises Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun; The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star; The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon; The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette; The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays; and The Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays.
