Sembcorp unveils Singapore’s largest solar farm and pioneering battery expansion on Jurong Island

Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp), a leading energy and urban solutions provider in Singapore, has unveiled two clean energy projects on Jurong Island – an innovative expansion of the existing energy storage system (ESS) and a solar farm.

The company has pioneered a battery stacking solution, marking the first vertical upscaling of an operational energy storage system to increase capacity without a larger physical footprint.

By leveraging its engineering capabilities in scaling infrastructure and innovative solutions, Sembcorp has increased its ESS capacity from 285MWh to 326MWh.

Capitalising on this success, Sembcorp is exploring a wider deployment of battery stacking across its Jurong Island ESS, cementing its leadership in advanced energy storage solutions.

Once the stacked ESS units are completed, Sembcorp will partner with the Energy Market Authority (EMA) to evaluate its capability to provide grid inertia, which is crucial for maintaining stability by resisting sudden changes in electricity frequency.

While rotating thermal generators have traditionally provided grid inertia, Singapore is now turning to advanced ESS as a stable and responsive alternative, particularly as the nation increases its reliance on solar power and electricity imports.

Chief Executive of EMA Puah Kok Keong emphasised the important role of energy storage in enabling Singapore’s energy transition.

“Our collaboration with Sembcorp will allow us to test and understand these new BESS capabilities better. The knowledge and experience gained will help EMA plan for a grid that is cleaner, smarter and more resilient,” he said.

The Sembcorp Jurong Island Solar Farm, with an installed capacity of 118MWp, is Singapore’s largest ground-mounted solar project to date. Spanning six interim vacant land parcels in an industrial zone, the solar farm generates clean energy sufficient to power approximately 33,200 four-room HDB flats annually.

This project demonstrates Sembcorp’s ability to leverage vacant land in Singapore, unlocking greater renewable energy potential in support of the Singapore Green Plan 2030.

On his part, President & CEO, Gas and Related Services, and CEO, Singapore, Sembcorp Industries, Koh Chiap Khiong, said that Jurong Island is a cornerstone of Singapore’s industrial ecosystem and Sembcorp has been a long-standing partner in delivering essential energy solutions on the island.
“As Singapore’s energy landscape evolves, we remain fully committed to supporting the nation’s energy needs. These initiatives demonstrate our ability to integrate and scale clean energy generation and storage technologies, reinforcing a resilient and future-ready energy ecosystem,” he said.
