The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Brunei Darussalam recently hosted a cooking class for some 27 participants, featuring two iconic Korean dishes, Kimchi Fried Rice and Chadol Doenjang Jjigae (Soybean Paste Stew with Beef Brisket).
The event, led by Chef Lee Minhyuk, the personal chef to the Korean ambassador, was held in celebration of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Brunei and Korea.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Sun Nahm-kook underscored the importance of cultural exchange through food.
“This cooking demonstration is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our cultural connections by sharing the joy of preparing and enjoying Korean cuisine together. I hope this experience not only introduces you to new dishes but also deepens your understanding of Korean culture,” he said.
Chef Lee Minhyuk, who has 15 years of culinary experience specialising in French cuisine, shared that his role in Brunei marks his first posting as a personal chef to an ambassador.
He chose Brunei due to its peaceful environment and has conducted four cooking classes at the embassy to date. “Teaching Bruneians and food enthusiasts to cook Korean dishes has been a rewarding experience,” he said.
Following the demonstration, participants were provided with ingredients and instructions to prepare the dishes in pairs within an hour. Chef Lee visited each station during the cooking process to observe, taste, and offer guidance. Once completed, the dishes were presented for judging.
