Hengyi Industries has launched its ‘Project Sustainable Integration of Natural and Renewable Energy’ (Project SINAR), a solar energy initiative aimed at providing renewable energy for its Petrochemical Refinery and contributing to Brunei Darussalam’s Renewable Energy Goals.
The first stage of the project is set to install Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels on building rooftops, car shed rooftops, and open spaces in Pulau Muara Besar (PMB), covering a total area of 36 hectares.
Preliminary analysis has shown that PMB is highly suitable for harnessing solar power due to the abundant annual solar irradiance received, earning it a grade A rating for Solar Energy Resources Richness.
With these favourable conditions, Stage 1 is projected to generate up to 48 megawatts peak (MWp) upon completion at the end of April 2025.
Hengyi Industries also plans to further expand the project in two additional stages, covering areas such as the coastline and shallow sea areas around PMB.
In total, Project SINAR is expected to generate up to 476 MWp, maximising solar energy generation and further reinforcing the company’s commitment to fostering a greener and more sustainable future for Brune.
In his speech, Chairman of Zhejiang Hengyi Group Co. Ltd and Hengyi Industries Qiu Jianlin said that the project will support Brunei’s transition to a cleaner energy structure and reduce carbon emissions.
“Project SINAR is not only a key initiative for our company in the field of renewable energy but also a substantial contribution to the development of sustainable energy in Brunei,” he said.
The chairman further said that Hengyi Industries will continue to work closely with the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to help achieve the objectives of Wawasan 2035, fostering balanced economic and environmental growth.
“We believe that Project SINAR will serve as a new driving force for sustainable development, bringing long-term benefits to both our company and the nation,” said Qiu.
Project SINAR underscores Hengyi Industries’ commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
As an integral part of Hengyi Industries’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to adopt and invest in renewable energy, Project SINAR aligns with Brunei Darussalam’s strategic goal to increase renewable energy in the power mix.
In the previous 2023 Legislative Council Meeting, YB Pehin Dato Awang Haji Halbi highlighted the nation’s goal to achieve a 30 per cent share of renewables in installed capacity.
The sultanate also targets achieving at least 200 MWp of solar energy capacity by 2025. This project also supports the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat’s strategies to increase renewable energy adoption and reduce carbon emissions.
The solar energy generated through Project SINAR will not only support the energy needs of Hengyi Industries’ Petrochemical Refinery but also contribute to Brunei’s national power grid when required, enhancing energy sustainability across the nation.
The launching ceremony was attended by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Defence Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Retired) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Halbi Haji Yussof and Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah.
Guests were shown a video presentation that provided an in-depth look at the project and its goals.
