The Embassy of the United States of America in Brunei Darussalam hosted a 2024 Presidential Election Watch event yesterday, providing Bruneians, the diplomatic community, and Americans abroad the opportunity to witness the U.S. Presidential Election live.
Held at Radisson Hotel, the event gathered Bruneian U.S. exchange alumni, government officials, civil society members, and business leaders for a morning to discuss the U.S. electoral system, its democratic values and the significant role elections play in shaping the United States foreign policy and its leadership.
In her welcoming remarks, U.S. Ambassador to Brunei, Caryn R. McClelland emphasised the unwavering friendship between the United States and Brunei Darussalam spanning 46 U.S. administrations, as the two nations celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations.
“Brunei Darussalam plays an important role in this region, and our bilateral relationship will continue to flourish, as it has over the past 170 years across numerous U.S. administrations. The bonds between our nations are strong and lasting,” she said.
She further said that elections are a fundamental part of U.S. democracy which allows more than 345 million Americans worldwide to choose their leaders and influence decisions that impact their lives.
“The general election, culminating in the Electoral College vote, is the grand finale. This unique system, where states award electoral votes based on population, ensures that all parts of our country have a say in choosing the president,” said the ambassador.
She said that the United States democracy is resilient and adaptable, highlighting that while it has evolved, facing many challenges along the way, it remains strong.
“This system is not without its imperfections, but the American commitment to learn and improve remains steadfast. Democracy is about more than just voting,” she said.
She concluded: “A free press, active civil society, and engaged citizens all play vital roles in making sure our system remains vibrant and inclusive. With all of these elements combined, the United States has created a dynamic environment that strengthens our country.”
The event allowed guests to witness the U.S. democratic process in action, reflecting the core values of transparency and civic engagement that are central to the American political system.
Attendees had the chance to witness live coverage of the election results through U.S. news outlets and participated in interactive U.S. Elections trivia games as well as information booths about the U.S. Electoral System. Winners of the U.S. election trivia received a limited U.S.-Brunei 40th anniversary challenge coin.
The U.S. Presidential Election takes place every four years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. This tradition, which dates back to 1789, has ensured consistent change in U.S. administrations, grounded by the same core values and commitments: promotion of security, democracy, prosperity, and development in the United States and around the world.
