BSJV companies award scholarships to 29 exemplary students

Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV) Companies recently awarded twenty-nine exemplary students with scholarships to pursue their higher education at various local and international universities.

Awarding companies under the BSJV Scholarship Scheme are Brunei Shell Petroleum, Brunei LNG and Brunei Shell Marketing where students will be attending Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Universiti Teknologi Brunei as well as universities in the United Kingdom.

Traditionally, the scholars’ achievements are feted in a contract signing ceremony. However, this year a virtual awards ceremony was held instead, ensuring everyone’s safety and complying to the guidelines by Ministry of Health in curbing the country’s second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her opening remarks, BSP’s Human Resources Director Hajah Zainab M.A. Omar said that it is BSP’s vision that the company is led by competitive and capable Bruneians as part of the cadre that drives Brunei’s industries beyond oil and gas.

The strategy is to nurture, develop and support the generation of Bruneian talent in order to have a robust and high-quality pipeline for the company and the nation, she said.

“We aim to invest in and develop people with a broad range of capabilities and skills to lead the organisation, and ultimately contribute to Wawasan Brunei 2035. The BSJV Scholarship Scheme is a great example of BSJV’s commitment to nurture our local talents. Since 1972, BSJV has sponsored more than 800 students for scholarships. Through this scheme, many young Bruneians have been able to pursue higher education locally and abroad,” said the human resources director.

On her part, a BSP scholar Nur Afini Ali who is set to study Geology at the University of Edinburgh said that she is ready to tackle the challenges of studying and living abroad, even amidst the pandemic.

She extended her heartfelt thanks to BSP for the scholarship and the opportunity to fulfil her lifelong dream of becoming a Geologist, she looks forward to joining the company once she completes her studies.

“This is truly what’s special about the BSJV scholarship – the guaranteed job position and a progressive career path as long as you are successful in your studies. I am thankful for the opportunity! I promise to work hard in my studies and most importantly, I will try my best to stay safe always,” she continued.

The highly coveted BSJV Scholarship Scheme is for post A-level/International Baccalaureate Diploma/Advanced Diploma school leavers and is awarded to highly selected students to pursue their Degree locally and overseas.

Upon successful completion of their studies, the scholars will join the BSJV companies as young professionals.

In addition to job creations and direct employment to BSJV companies, BSP also contributes to the needs of our business in the energy industry, through growing and developing our local Bruneian talent funnel in diverse disciplines which include petroleum, mechanical, process engineering, environmental science, legal and aviation.

The virtual ceremony was attended by Shell Country Chair in Brunei and Managing Director of BSP Agnete Johnsgaard-Lewis; Managing Director of BLNG Hjh Farida Dato Talib; Managing Director of BSM Muhammad Norshafiee Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil as well as the scholarship recipients. – Analisa Amu
