One positive case has passed away on Friday announced the Minister of Health, leading the total number of COVID-19 related fatalities in Brunei to 16.
Speaking during a press conference, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Md Isham Hj Jaafar said that the deceased was Case 2864, a 79-year-old man who died of a lung infection after contracting COVID-19.
The minister also announced that sixty-three new active cases were also recorded on Friday, leading the total number of COVID-19 cases in Brunei to 3,894.
Meanwhile, 105 individuals have recovered which figure includes 35 positive cases from Category 1 who have undergone self-isolation for 14 days at their respective homes.
“All of them underwent a repeat swab test on day 12 and were confirmed to have recovered,” he said.
With that, the minister added, the total number of recovered cases in the country has increased to 2,418 cases.
Moreover, there are 24 additional new cases to ten of the existing active clusters and they are those who are currently being quarantined and were found to be in contact with several confirmed cases.
Meanwhile, 39 cases are still being investigated to determine the source of the infection, said the minister, adding that contact tracing for all these new cases is in full swing and identified close contacts are required to undergo mandatory quarantine and RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 testing.
Currently, there are 1,454 active cases in the country and among these cases, nine cases are in critical condition, where eight cases require assistance of artificial ventilation and one case still requires the help of an additional heart/lung machine (ECMO).
Furthermore, 32 cases that were categorised in Category 4 are now admitted at the Intensive Care Unit for close monitoring, said the minister.
“On 9 September 2021, Alhamdulillah, one case has safely given birth to a baby boy via surgery. Both mother and the newborn are in good condition,” said the minister.
In the past 24 hours, a total of 4,261 samples have been tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus which brings the total number of laboratory tests conducted from January 2020 to 269,041.
COVID-19 vaccination status
In regards to the country’s COVID-19 vaccination status, to date the total number of COVID-19 vaccinations in Brunei Darussalam is at 371,204 doses.
Currently, 52.0 per cent of the nation’s population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Meanwhile, 29.8 per cent of the population has received a complete COVID-19 vaccine injection.
“A total of 36,470 senior citizens (80.7 per cent) had received at least one dose and 19,603 senior citizens (43.3 per cent) had received a complete COVID-19 vaccine injection,” said the minister.
The Ministry of Health also informed that to date,, the number of vaccine injections among pregnant women is 2,478 people, which is 70 per cent of pregnant women have received at least one dose of vaccine.
Furthermore, a total of 1,873 breastfeeding mothers received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
“Pregnant women have a higher risk of COVID-19 infection and complications than non-pregnant women,” said the minister.
Moreover, pregnant women are advised to register at the Maternal Health Clinic to get the vaccination appointment or can continue to walk in at the vaccination centres in all districts to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
