Eighty-eight braved the needle for a cause

A total of 88 pints of blood were collected at a recent blood donation drive organised by local online news agency Darussalam Media for the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital Blood Bank.

The blood donation which took place at The Core in Universiti Brunei Darussalam was a joint initiative with UBD Corp and in partnership with The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Casbah London Kebab, MIXEL, MINT and MixMedia Group.

The one-day event had a positive reception with over 100 registrations consisting of students, officers and staff at the university as well as members of the public who were first-time and repeat blood donors.

In an interview with The Bruneian, first-time donor Munerah Abd Rahman said that she was trying her luck to donate as she was previously unfit to donate.

“It feels nice knowing that the donation will help save other lives and that with one pint of blood we can save three lives,” she said, adding that donating blood can reduce 500 calories.

Meanwhile, another donor Aziemah Hj Sallehhuddin said that she was happy to contribute to the country’s low blood supply.

“Blood donation not only burns the extra calories but helps lower the risk of heart attacks, so that is a plus,” said the 31-year-old first-timer.

The drive is Darussalam Media’s annual initiative hosted together with its clients and stakeholders as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.

“We aimed to do this good cause at least twice a year and we are very content with the positive turnups today, assisting the national blood bank to increase the blood supply,” said the news agency’s deputy general manager.
