Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd have awarded 108 students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) with joint scholarships that will offer the students with employment opportunities at Hengyi Industries upon graduation.
A scholarship signing ceremony was held on Thursday which saw 34 students from UBD and 74 students from IBTE signing the joint scholarship programme between Hengyi Industries and UBD-Zhejiang University (ZJU) as well as between Hengyi Industries and the IBTE-Lanzhou Petrochemical University of Vocational Technology (LPUVT) respectively.
Established in 2014, the UBD-ZJU Joint Scholarship Programme is a four-year degree course in Chemical and Process Engineering where students will be spending two years of academic studies at UBD followed by 18 months of studies at ZJU and a six months internship at Hengyi Industries.
Meanwhile, students under IBTE-LPUVT Joint Scholarship Programme, which was established in 2018, will be undergoing a three-year programme in Refinery Operator where they will be spending a year of studies at IBTE Jefri Bolkiah Campus, a year of studies at LPUVT and a year of on-the-job-training with Hengyi Industries at Pulau Muara Besar.
To date, 161 students were awarded under UBD-ZJU Joint Scholarship Programme and 145 students under IBTE-LZU Joint Scholarship Programme.
According to Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Hengyi Industries, Xu Ye, a total of 127 students from both IBTE and UBD have completed their studies and are now with Hengyi, working in various departments and taking up various roles as well as responsibilities.
During his opening remarks, he said that the scholarship programmes represent Hengyi’s commitment towards investing in the sultanate as well as the development of the country’s talents in areas of technology and oil and gas industry.
“We strive to not only recruit locally but also enhance their capacity building by equipping them with the necessary training and skillsets while at the same time providing them with the relevant coaching, exposure and experience,” he said during his opening remarks.
“We aspire to create a competent global workforce that can contribute to the development of the company and ultimately groom them to be the future leaders of the industry with proper sets of skills that is demanded of today’s working environment,” he added.
The event signing ceremony was then followed by a handover ceremony of a donation by the Deputy CEO of Hengyi Industries to the Executive Trustee of Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, Pg Datin Hjh Noraini Pg Dipa Negara Laila Diraja Pengiran Hj Abd Momin.
The $50,000 donation will go towards the development Pusat Ehsan, the first school for children with special needs in Brunei Darussalam, which accommodates and provides roughly 200 special-needs individuals with ages ranging from 5 to 15 years old with quality education and co-curricular activities that emphasises on redefining the meaning of success.
The scholarship and donation are part of Hengyi Industries’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) under the Hengyi Future-Ready Initiative and Hengyi Cares Initiative respectively.
The goal of these programmes are to nurture the next generation of Bruneian youths by offering fully-funded scholarships to local talents that demonstrate exceptional academic achievement with an interest in working in the petrochemical industry, as well as providing accessible education to individuals with special needs in the sultanate.
Present as the guest of honour during the event was Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr. Hjh Romaizah Hj Mohd Salleh, the Minister of Education.
Also present was Her Excellency Madam Yu Hong, Ambassador of China to Brunei Darussalam.
