Central Bank releases special edition coins

Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) recently released four special edition coins commemorating the naming of Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Bridge (SHOAS), the country’s megabridge that was first opened for public use in 2020.

The central bank produced the Special Edition Gold Coin 1, Special Edition Gold Coin 2, Silver Coin and Cupronickel Coin with face values of $300, $300, $30, and $3, respectively.

In a press briefing, Executive Director, Currency Management at BDCB Pg Maslina Pg Hj Mahmud said that the commemorative coins are available for purchase at the central bank’s currency gift shop, starting 8 November 2022.

Special Edition Gold Coin 1

The front face of the coin features the portrait of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam during the royal procession in the capital to mark the monarch’s golden jubilee to the throne.

Meanwhile, the back of the coin shows the aerial view of the dual carriageway bridge connecting Brunei-Muara district to Temburong district from Kota Batu through Brunei Bay and mangrove forests until Labu road.

This coin has a face value of $300 with a selling price of $4,000.

Special Edition Gold Coin 2

The front side of this coin portrays the images of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam with the monarch’s late father, Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien. Meanwhile, the back side of the coin has the same design as the Special Edition Gold Coin 1.

The coin has a face value of $300 with a selling price of $4,000.

Special Edition Silver Coin

The front design of this coin is similar to the first edition gold coin with the back design featuring the cable-stayed section of the SHOAS bridge across the eastern shipping line or easter channel.

This bridge has clearance navigation for the passage of large ships. It has a face value of $30 with a selling price of $300.

Cupronickel Coin

This coin has the same front face design as the first special edition and silver coins. Meanwhile, the back of the coin has the image of the SHOAS bridge tower bearing designs based on Brunei’s Malay Muslim Monarchy (MIB) philosophy – moon crescent and stars are the symbols of a Muslim country, three kalimah to always remember Allah Subahanahu Wata’ala and a jewel-shaped motif to symbolise the four districts.

The cupronickel has a face value of $3 with a selling price of $110.

Members of the public can visit BDCB’s currency gift shop located at Level 1 within Ministry of Finance and Economy building. It is open from Monday to Thursday (8.30am – 11.30am, 2pm – 4.30pm) and Friday (8.30am -11am).
