Swirling flashing-coloured lights, tricks and flips and mesmerising acrobatic performances filled the Jerudong International School Arts Centre Theatre recently.
Blending the ancient art of diabolo juggling with contemporary dance, audiences were treated to a fun and spectacular evening of “Light of Life” performance by the Diabolo Dance Theatre from Taiwan.
As one of the few comprehensive entertainment performance groups in Taiwan active on the world stage, the Diabolo Dance Theatre has performed in more than 30 countries around the world since its establishment in 1986, with over 3000 performances.
Directed by founder of Diabolo Dance Theater Liu Le-che, “Light of Life” is a colourful multimedia fantasy of vivid sights and atmospheric sounds that tells the magical tale of sea goddesses and the four elements.
Audiences were introduced to an exciting combination of contemporary circus, dance and music providing them with a kaleidoscope glimpse into Taiwan.
As the lights go out, opening with a spectacle with an ocean theme featuring clownfish, mermaids and beautiful performance by the Goddess of the Sea has the crowd swooning from the start with her vocals.
Twisting, tossing and throwing of the colourful LED diabolos and the use of light, the incredibly skilled and passionate performers had the audience mesmerised from start to finish.
The uniqueness of the performance is that you can feel that sense of unity from the group with each performer having their shining moments on stage, from the graceful dancers to the comedic performance from Liu Nai-wen in his oversized coat and giant hat.
One of the many highlights of the show is when the dance troupe broke the fourth wall when, at one point, they interacted with the audience by giving them a chance to try out the art of diabolo on stage.
The show brings in excellent dance, music and contemporary circus, melding them with impressive lighting and visual design to create high quality entertainment.
