Sultan attends state funeral of late Tun Taib Mahmud

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, on Friday attended the State Funeral of Allahyarham Tun Dato Laila Utama Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib bin Mahmud, former Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Accompanying His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen.

Upon arrival at Kuching International Airport, His Majesty was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Seri Laila Jasa Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, and Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, as Minister-in-Attendance; and His Excellency Brigadier General (R) Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud bin Haji Saidin, High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to Malaysia.

His Majesty then attended mass Zuhur prayer and funeral prayer for Allahyarham Tun Dato Laila Utama Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib bin Mahmud at Demak Mosque. Allahyarham was then laid to rest during a burial ceremony at Demak Jaya Cemetery.

Also present at the State Funeral were His Excellency Tun Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak and The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Premier of Sarawak.

Born on 21 May 1936 in Miri, Allahyarham Tun Dato Laila Utama Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib bin Mahmud passed away early Wednesday morning, 21st February 2024, at Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL) at the age of 87 years old.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam bestowed Brunei Darussalam State Honorary Medals to Allahyarham, namely the Most Esteemed Family Order Laila Utama (D.K.), which carries the title of Dato Laila Utama on 14th August 2014; and the Most Honourable Order of Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei (S.P.M.B.) First Class, which carries the title of Dato Seri Paduka on 3 September 1989.
