British High Commission opens UK-Brunei 40th anniversary photo exhibition

The British High Commission launched a photo exhibition at the Brunei Energy Hub on Thursday, commemorating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom (UK) and Brunei Darussalam.

In his remarks, British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam John Virgoe said that the display and the associated book illustrate the long-standing relationship between both countries.

“… firmly rooted in our cultural ties, our shared legal system, our strong collaboration on defence and education, the warm relationships between our Royal Families – and of course, the close bonds between our peoples,” he said.

It also demonstrates the rich and deep history shared by the UK and Brunei, highlighting milestones and moments that have shaped the partnership over the decades.

“Whilst 2024 is a special anniversary, the relationship of course goes back much further than 1984, right back to the 18th century. It has been particularly enjoyable to source archive photos and material from these earlier years,” said the high commissioner.

The event was attended by the Permanent Secretary (Politics and International Organisation) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pengiran Norhashimah Pengiran Mohd Hassan.

The high commissioner also extended his appreciation to senior government officials and key stakeholders who played a crucial role in fostering the bilateral relationship.

“From our friends in the Bruneian government and in business, to the defence communities who work so closely together. From our wonderful teachers to our special communities of Chevening alumni, Commonwealth Points of Light and Women of the Future. Individuals – Bruneian, British and others – who play a key role in civil society and with whom we are delighted to be associated. Thank you for all that you do,” he added.

Reflecting on his four-year tenure in Brunei, the high commissioner shared that many achievements were made including attending three Royal Weddings in Brunei.

Other highlights were accompanying His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s visit to Downing Street and attending the graduation of His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen from Royal Marine Commando Training in the UK.

“It was also a pleasure to host His Royal Highness the Crown Prince when he visited the British Garrison last year,” said the outgoing envoy.

Touching on the political front, the high commissioner reiterated Brunei’s support that had helped the UK become the first new ASEAN Dialogue Partner in 25 years and launched a UK-Brunei Strategic Dialogue, which has now met three times.

“We are about to have the first Free Trade Agreement between Brunei and the UK, through our shared membership in the CPTPP. This will lead to opportunities to grow our trade and economic ties still further,” he said.

He added: “We’ve also deepened our cooperation on climate change, on economic diversification, on maritime issues and on health and education.”

Supported by the Museum Department, National Archive at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Radio Television Brunei, the exhibition presents a curated collection of photographs capturing the essence of UK-Brunei relations.

The photo exhibition is open to the public for free until 16 July allowing visitors to explore and appreciate the historical ties and shared future between the UK and Brunei.
