The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has announced the appointment of Alexandra McKenzie as the new British High Commissioner Designate to Brunei Darussalam.
McKenzie succeeds John Virgoe, who ends a successful posting in Brunei after four years. She will assume her role as British High Commissioner Designate in August 2024.
This appointment marks a significant milestone for the High Commission as McKenzie becomes the first female British High Commissioner to Brunei. Her extensive regional experience and deep understanding of Southeast Asia’s dynamics make her an ideal representative for the United Kingdom in Brunei.
McKenzie expressed enthusiasm for her new role and felt honoured to be appointed as His Majesty’s High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam in this significant anniversary year of diplomatic relations.
“Having worked with Brunei and spent much time in Southeast Asia during my career, I appreciate the strength of the relationship in everything from defence to education, climate to ASEAN cooperation. I look forward to getting to know Brunei, its people and culture and to doing my bit to deepen our partnership,” she said.
McKenzie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new position, having previously served as Deputy Head of Mission in both Singapore and Bangkok. Her background will be invaluable as she works to enhance the strong and multifaceted relationship between the United Kingdom and Brunei Darussalam.
The UK looks forward to continuing to build on the longstanding and fruitful partnership with Brunei under McKenzie’s leadership.
