The Hidden Tranquility of Tasik Cermin: Ipoh’s Enchanting Mirror Lake
Tasik Cermin, or “Mirror Lake,” is one of Ipoh’s hidden gems, offering a tranquil escape amidst the limestone hills that characterise the region.
A short drive from the city centre, this serene lake is nestled within a secluded cave, providing a natural haven that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
The name “Tasik Cermin” aptly describes the lake’s glass-like surface which perfectly reflects the surrounding limestone cliffs and lush greenery, creating a picturesque and almost surreal landscape.
Upon arrival, visitors embark on a short walk through a 90-metre tunnel carved into the limestone, adding a sense of adventure to the journey.
This tunnel, with a history spanning over a century, was originally excavated by Hakka Chinese miners in the 1900s to extract iron ore, a vital resource for iron and steel production.
Mining techniques included blasting with dynamite and manual extraction with picks and shovels, and a railway system was built to transport the iron ore via minecart.
At the end of the tunnel, a breathtaking view of the mirror-like lake awaits, framed by towering limestone formations. Photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike will appreciate the serene and undisturbed waters, providing an ideal setting.
The reflections on the lake are especially striking during the early morning or late afternoon when the light casts a magical glow over the entire area, so make sure to plan your 20-minute boat ride at the main Tasik Cermin then.
Tasik Cermin offers a peaceful environment where visitors can relax and connect with nature. The quiet ambiance is perfect for a leisurely stroll, meditation, or simply soaking in the stunning views.
While facilities around the lake are minimal, the unspoiled charm of Tasik Cermin remains its greatest attraction.
Don’t forget to discover the Hidden World at Tasik Cermin 2! The 20 to 30-minute boat ride can be accessed through a 120-metre long water tunnel, which was dug by adventurers long ago and has existed for thousands of years.
At the end of the tunnel, you’ll find an even more peaceful and pristine lake, untouched by humans and with rare sightings of mountain goats and other animals like butterflies, raccoons, and squirrels. The knowledgeable boatmen are ready to share the history and stories of the lake, making the ride extra enjoyable.
Whether you are an avid adventurer or someone seeking a tranquil retreat, a visit to Tasik Cermin in Ipoh, Perak, promises a memorable and serene experience amidst Malaysia’s natural splendour.
Perfect for those who aim to sightsee, learn more about placid lakes, hike and trek, elevate their senses, eat and drink while enjoying the serenity and adventure, Tasik Cermin invites you to discover the heart of the wilderness and explore its hidden treasures.
Creamy Froths and Delights Near Ipoh’s Hidden Gems
Right next to Tasik Cermin is the Kin Loong Valley White Coffee cafe, a brand established in the late 1980s, renowned for serving customers creamy and robust white coffee.
The cafe’s fourth branch offers a relaxing space for visitors to unwind after a day of activities at the lake. Those seeking a picturesque coffee experience are also welcomed to enjoy a cup at this unique coffeehouse.
The coffee beans are roasted with margarine to achieve a richer, more caramelised flavour, which is further enhanced by adding condensed milk and evaporated milk during the brewing process. Sugar and salt are also added during the roast.
The coffee is then “pulled” to create a frothy texture, resulting in a creamier, slightly salty beverage.
Pair your coffee with light bites such as toast with kaya and butter or steamed bread that melts in your mouth. Their sweet potato balls are also a favourite among both children and adults.
The cafe offers other varieties of food that can be perfectly paired with the White “kaw kaw” coffee or even tea.
The owner, Kong has continuously innovated and refined the original recipe to deliver the best white coffee experience.
In a previous media interview, he emphasised that the distinct taste lies in the technique and ingredient proportions rather than any secret ingredient.
