Brunei Shell Petroleum plants over 300 Kapur Paya saplings

Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) recently planted 382 Kapur Paya saplings at the Anduki Forest Reserve.

The initiative is a collaboration between BSP and the Brunei Forestry Department, supported by Sphiere, BSP’s LiveWIRE Alumni.

The Kapur Paya species was chosen as it is native to the area and is categorised as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List. Additionally, part of the forest reserve was damaged from past forest fires, and recognising that the area is suitable for reforestation, the species was selected for the tree-planting initiative.

Kapur Paya is also one of the species that was grown in BSP nursery as part of a three-year project that started in 2019 to ensure BSP has adequate saplings to be planted within the degraded habitats.

Over 20 BSPCares volunteers worked alongside BSP’s Environment team and the Forest Rehabilitation and Climate Change Section of the Forestry Department.

The tree-planting activity also supports Brunei National Climate Change Policy’s Strategy 2 Forest Cover, which seeks to plant 500,000 new trees by 2035. To date, BSP has planted over 1,000 trees in various locations in Belait in 2024.
