Brunei Darussalam recently celebrated the successful arrival of the cruise ship, Zhao Shang Yi Dun – Viking Sun, the second cruise ship to dock in the sultanate this year.
Making its maiden visit, the vessel sailed in from Kota Kinabalu, carrying 257 passengers and 351 crew members, before continuing its journey to Singapore after a brief stop in the country.
Passengers were warmly welcomed by a vibrant hadrah performance, highlighting Brunei Darussalam’s rich cultural heritage. Their journey continued with visits to iconic landmarks, including Istana Nurul Iman, Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, and the historic Kampong Ayer, immersing them in Brunei’s history and culture. Many also took the opportunity to savour traditional delicacies and purchase authentic souvenirs at the Cruise Ship Centre, adding a personal touch to their experience.

One passenger, Machiko, an 82-year-old man from Japan, expressed his admiration for the politeness of the Bruneian people. He was especially impressed when Bruneian drivers stopped their cars to let pedestrians cross the street, highlighting the respectful and courteous nature of the locals. In addition, Suzanne, a visitor from Brisbane, Australia, had an unforgettable experience in Brunei Darussalam, with highlights including a scenic water taxi tour through Kampong Ayer, a visit to the captivating Museum, and a tour of the majestic Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque. She was deeply impressed by the country’s vibrant cultural heritage and the genuine warmth of its hospitality, leaving with a lasting appreciation for Brunei Darussalam’s unique charm.
This arrival highlights Brunei’s growing appeal among Chinese cruise travellers. Zhao Shang Yi Dun – Viking Sun marks the second of at least 11 cruise ships expected to visit Brunei Darussalam in 2025, reflecting the Sultanate’s efforts to attract more visitors via the cruise market. The Tourism Development Department is set to welcome the next vessel, Norwegian Sky, scheduled to dock on 3 February 2025 for her second visit, further demonstrating the growing interest of global cruise operators and travellers to Brunei Darussalam.
