The U.S. Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Caryn McClelland hosted a farewell reception today at her residence with Bruneian alumni who have pursued higher education in the United States or completed U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs.
The event, which included members of the Brunei-U.S. Association, was an opportunity for the Ambassador to celebrate the lasting bonds formed through educational and cultural exchange and to recognize the alumni’s contributions to strengthening U.S.-Brunei relations.
Ambassador McClelland expressed her gratitude to the alumni community for their strong partnership with the U.S Embassy in strengthening people-to-people ties between the United States and Brunei Darussalam.
She emphasized the critical role alumni play in sustaining the bilateral relationship and encouraged continued engagement with the Embassy.

“Each of you has played a vital role in building the people-to-people ties that form the foundation of our bilateral partnership,” the Ambassador said.
“The relationships we’ve built don’t end with my departure – they are connections that will sustain and strengthen our partnership for years to come.”
To date, over 730 Bruneians have either pursued higher education in the United States or completed U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs, representing a significant investment in the bilateral relationship and the development of future leaders.
Many alumni have gone on to assume leadership positions in government, policymaking, academia, and the private sector, while others continue to drive positive changes in their local communities.
Their achievements stand as a testament to the success of U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs in developing the next generation of leaders and strengthening the bonds between our two nations.
As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary of independence in 2026, this gathering reflects the enduring values of innovation and opportunity that have defined America since its founding. The U.S. Embassy remains committed to expanding educational and cultural exchanges that deepen mutual understanding and strengthen the enduring U.S.-Brunei partnership.
