Brunei inks air services agreement with Malaysia

Brunei and Malaysia have signed the Air Services Agreement, marking the renewal of the contract which was first inked on 14 February 1992 and the improvement of air transport rights.

The deal aimed to ensure commercial air transport services can be executed liberally and in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) guidelines including the existing regulations and laws of both countries.

Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) in a statement said that the agreement can help improve air connectivity and open cooperation opportunities among designated airlines as well as destinations between Brunei and Malaysia.

Signing on behalf of the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam was MTIC Minister Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha. Meanwhile, the Government of Malaysia was represented by its transport minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

In attendance to witness the ceremony were Malaysian Prime Minister Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and High Commissioner of Brunei to Malaysia Brigadier General (R) Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud Haji Saidin @ Haji Mohd Saidin.

Furthermore, YB Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary also attended the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA ’23) which took place at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Center (MIEC) in Langkawi, Malaysia.

On its 16th installment, the biennial LIMA ’23 exhibition was jointly managed by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Defense of Malaysia.

It was also conducted with air and maritime transport conferences, attended by delegations from administrators, regulators and international commercial parties showcasing various commercial maritime, aerospace and latest technological products.

YB Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary also had separate meetings with Malaysian Minister of Transport and Somalian Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, aimed to increase cooperation and exchange ideas in dealing with issues and challenges faced by the countries.

The transport minister was accompanied by Permanent Secretary of MTIC Mohammad Nazri Mohammad Yusof, and senior officers from the ministry. – Analisa Amu
