Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sendiran Berhad (BSM) and Biofield Solutions recently signed an agreement for a local composting campaign.
The programme aims to support the nation’s goal for sustainability by collecting food waste, converting them to organic compost, and later distributing them to local farmers thus contributing towards a sustainable food and agricultural cycle.
The campaign will also offer community involvement by accepting public food waste deposits through designated collection points at selected Shell Retail Stations which will be announced at a later date.
The signing was between BSM Managing Director Muhammad Norshafiee Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil and Chief Executive Officer of Biofield Solutions Dr Vanessa Teo.
In his remarks, Muhammad Norshafiee said that empowering our communities through sustainable initiatives is not just a duty but a commitment.
“At BSM, we drive progress by fostering partnerships that elevate the well-being of our nation, paving the way for a brighter future,” he said.
On her part, Dr Vanessa Teo expressed that Biofield is thrilled to collaborate with BSM for the food waste campaign.
“It leads towards a circular economy, reducing landfill dependence, and enhancing the fertility and productivity of our farming lands,” she said.
Food waste presents a significant environmental and community challenge. In 2019, approximately 32 per cent of waste in the country was attributed to food, contributing to the already high waste generation of 1.15 kilograms per capita. (According to the World Bank, the global average is 0.74 kilograms per capita.)
Currently, most generated food waste is sent to the landfill in Sungai Paku.
